In the winter time, the house is in a square formation, with small windows and high thermal mass. It literally hugs itself. As the seasons change and climate warms, the house opens up, like a flower opens up to allow light and air to penetrate the inside of the building offering full panoramic views of the surroundings.
D*Dynamic literally unfolds itself like a Rubiks Cube. The internal walls become external walls, doors become windows and windows become doors. A house like this has never been done before in the history of architecture and we believe that creating buildings that can adapt and change is a much more sustainable way of living.
In 1908 an English mathematician called Henry Ernest Dudeney worked out how to turn a perfect square into a perfect equilateral triangle by dissecting the square in to 4 distinct shapes, these shapes can be rearranged into the triangle. This concept alone is fascinating but and the possibilities are endless when applying the formula to world of architecture and design. The animation below is a concept diagram of the stages of transition that the formula creates. The Formula has 8 fixed positions this means you can literally have 8 House in 1.
Over the course of the year D*Haus changes form to respond to its environment. It mimics nature. The house opens up to respond to the environmental conditions, much like a flower opening over the course of a day.
Solar radiation from the Sun can have a significant impact on a buildings performance. Whilst often a source of overheating due to inadequate controls, with thoughtful design it can provide a cheap and abundant source of energy in your building. This energy can be utilised to heat spaces in winter, provide hot water, and even generate ventilation for cooling in summer.
The D*Dynamic can change its shape and its perspective both seasonally and throughout the course, not only dawn to dusk but also twilight to sunrise. The house is designed to take advantage of site specific environmental conditions of the location on which it sits. D*Dynamic can be positioned relative to both the angle of the sun and the views of the surrounding landscape.
When in triangle formation, D*Dynamic is orientated due south. Its south east facade which contains bedrooms which are all glazed, means that as you wake up in the morning you can watch the sun rise. After a day’s activities, the user can come home and watch the sun set in the south west facing living rooms and kitchen.
The house is a product of an
applied mathematical realisation. Thus from a manufacturing point of view the design deploys only one set of materials to achieve the
flexible possibilities which its design
invites. This means that less waste is produced during the manufacturing process, and from a mass-production point of view, D*Dynmaic offers savings in both time and materials.
By utilising the Haberdashers formula, the D*Haus range also takes advantage of the manufacturing and design possibilites that the formula allows:
